Post 009 — Cheers to summer!

Hello friends!

It was a super-hot summer evening, so I wore a gauzy, cotton midi dress out to dinner. I love the feminine ruffles on the sleeves and hem of this Rebecca Taylor dress. I purchased it a few seasons ago, so I linked these pretty ruffle dresses here and here from Anthropology.

I wore chunky raffia heels by Tory Burch which I also bought a couple of years ago. Nordstrom has some similar styles by Jeffrey Campbell, Steve Madden, and Seychelles. I finished my look with gold and pearl earrings from Barbara Boz Boutique in Birmingham.

I am always excited to go out the day my hair is cut and colored by my amazing stylist Lindsey (Instagram: @Lindsey_opal_aster). Nothing is better than a professional blow-out! Gwyneth Paltrow once said, “Once your hair is done, you are 90% the way there.” I 100% agree!

Post 007 — Return of the puffy sleeve

Post 007 — Return of the puffy sleeve

Hello friends!

We were off to the west side of Michigan again for a quick weekend visit. We went out to dinner with my family to one of our favorite restaurants in Union Pier called the Red Arrow Roadhouse.

I wanted to try the puffy sleeve look without spending too much money on the trend, so I bought this cute t-shirt from Zara. I paired it with with a cotton blue striped skirt from J.Crew Factory (on sale now!). To finish this casual look, I wore my favorite white slides from Tory Burch, which are no longer available, so here is a similar style.

Enjoy what’s left of your summer!

Post 006 — A dress with pants? Yes!

Hello friends!

I am loving the look of wearing a dress with pants! I found this lightweight, embroidered shirt dress at Zara and paired it with my favorite white jeans from J. Crew. I dressed it up for evening by adding some fun rhinestone earrings (they are several years old, so here is a similar pair) and a vintage bracelet that belonged to my grandmother. My white wedge sandals are from a previous season, so here is a current style available at Nordstrom Rack.

This can also be a casual, daytime look – take off the fancy jewelry and heels and add white sneakers and a cross body bag and you are good to go!

Post 005 — Running Errands in Style

Hello friends!

Today I threw my hair up into a messy bun and put on one my favorite casual summer dresses to run errands. I bought a few different colors of this super comfortable t-shirt midi dress from both J. Crew and J. Crew Factory, which are on sale now! The version of the dress at J.Crew is slightly better quality, but I love the camo print dress available at J. Crew Factory.

I paired the dress with my favorite white sneakers by Russell and Bromley (a gift from my sister from London, so they are not available in the U.S.). Here is a similar pair on sale at Nordstrom. My platform sneakers are one of my favorite pairs of shoes right now and know I will be getting a lot of wear out of them for many seasons to come. My Shinola crossbody purse is from a previous season, but I found a similar look here at Anthropologie.

Oldish and Stylish tip: Try pairing sneakers with a dress for a modern, casual look!

Post 004 — Summer Lovin’ in Lilly

Post 004 — Summer Lovin’ in Lilly

Hello friends!

I spent a long weekend with my family in beautiful “up north” Michigan, and I brought along my some of my favorite Lilly Pulitzer outfits. I love the bright colors and fun patterns and I always feel happy when I am wearing Lilly. I think this clothing is a great investment; the designs in this brand are high quality, classic, and always look stylish and put together — perfect for summer vacation!

I wore my blue off-the-shoulder dress to dinner, which I bought several seasons ago. I have owned many of my Lilly pieces for over 10 years, and they stand the test of time! Some of my current favorite dresses are here, here, and here. My white wedge sandals are also from a previous season, so here is a similar look. My bright pink lipstick is the color Girl About Town from MAC.

My dear friend, Ann, invited my family over to her house on gorgeous Walloon Lake. This romper is perfect for a casual day of boating and hanging out with friends. I wore it with my favorite Tory Burch slides (they are no longer available, but here is a similar look).

I wore this a-line skirt for an evening in Bay Harbor. I paired it with a simple white tee and a large white tote, which I use as both a purse and a beach bag. You can find similar bags here and here. My platform sandals are from a previous season, but I am linking current looks here and here.

After dinner I love changing into these stretchy, cute Lilly pants and this tank top from Banana Republic. This super comfy outfit is great for relaxing and lounging around in the evening.

Oldish and Stylish tip: You are never too old to wear a short skirt. Pair it with a shoe or sandal with a wedge or platform to give you a little more height and to make your legs look longer!

Post 003 — Date night in summer white

Post 003 — Date night in summer white

Hello friends!

Saturday was date night with my husband.  It was a little chilly, so I wore a long-sleeve white dress from J. Crew that I got at the end of the season sale last year.  I have linked some cute white dresses here and here and here.  I love wearing white in the summer, but sometimes it can wash me out. In order to add a little color to my face, I added some extra bronzer, and one of my favorite peachy-pink lipsticks in the color Costa Chic by MAC.

I paired my white dress with black accessories that I have owned for many years. Since the accessories are no longer available, I will link some similar current items. I found these black tassel earrings on Amazon, these Ted Baker black wedge sandals at Nordstrom, and this Tory Burch cross-body bag on sale at Nordstrom.

Old-ish & Stylish tip: You are never too old to wear a ribbon in your hair! I dressed up my pony tail with a black satin ribbon – easy and stylish!

Post 002 — Afternoon on the town

Hello friends!

I spent a fun day in Saugatuck, Michigan with my family enjoying a relaxing afternoon of lunch and shopping.

My blue chambray J.Crew romper was perfect for this gorgeous 70 degree day.  I completed my look with these comfortable Tory Burch slides (white is sold out online so here is a similar style).  My gold Tory Burch tote is from a previous season but here is an updated version.

I hope you all had a great July 4th weekend!

Post 001 — Hi there, I’m Rachel

Hi there, I’m Rachel

. . . and I just turned 50 years old. While I don’t believe there are rules for fashion and beauty, I have found that as I age, I feel confident and comfortable in styles that flatter and enhance my changing looks.

I grew up in southwestern Michigan in a small town near the shores of Lake Michigan.  I attended Albion College where I met my husband of 20+ years, and now I live in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills with my husband and two teenage daughters.

As a little girl, I was inspired by my stylish and well-traveled grandmother who grew up in Vienna, Austria and was always fashionable and elegant.  My mother also shared her love of clothing with me.  She was an extremely talented seamstress and sewed many treasured and memorable outfits throughout my childhood and teenage years.  These special women inspired my love for all things beautiful.

While my style is mostly casual, I also enjoy dressing up for a date night with my husband, a girls’ night out, or a special occasion.  I will be sharing my everyday looks, beauty tips, and lifestyle ideas here on this blog, as well as on Instagram and Facebook.

I’m Old-ish & Stylish.  Join me on my new adventure!
